Challenge

In 10 weeks, design a visual system for a 3-day music festival catered to the UW campus.

Initial Research

Market GapAs Gen Z continues to gravitate towards alternative musicians and stripped-back performances, I identified an opportunity in Seattle’s music scene: a jazz festival that connects younger audiences to the genre and the city. Inspired by Montreux & Montréal Jazz Festival, and settings like NPR’s Tiny Desk, I saw a gap in a city whose culture embraces jazz but lacks a festival reflecting its evolving music scene.

Rain-soaked streets, dimly lit cafés, and no widely recognized jazz festival? The disconnect was clear. While Seattle has an established festival, its lineup, marketing, and visual identity primarily appeal to older audiences, leaving little room for the genre’s creative possibilities.

FindingsBridging this gap requires a fresh visual identity and a digital presence. An app can build anticipation before the festival, deepen engagement during the event, and keep the community connected long after it ends.

Solution

Wordmark

(noun): The light of the moon; often associated with growth, change, renewal.

(USP)

A Jazz Festival bringing ‘Big-Stage Names’ to ‘Small-Stage Experiences’,

(CVP)

that Bridges the Gap Between Classic Jazz and Modern Music Lovers through Acoustic Setlists, Jazz- Orientated Performances, & a Standout Design experience.

Font Pairing

This ink-heavy typographic system emphasizes movement and hierarchy, pairing Compacta’s bold, uniform cap height with Windsor Pro’s curving serif forms. With subtle modifications, each typeface pays homage to 1950s music and film, while their unexpected pairing offers a contemporary reinterpretation of the era.

Wayfinding

Overhead banners flanking University Ave,
Quotes pulled from famous jazz songs.
